Andrew Brewer ’12 found that majoring in social studies education helped him in more than just the classroom. “It has helped me in relationships,” he says. “Especially when understanding and relating to others.”

Earning a degree in social studies education at John Brown University provides students an in-depth, experiential education. From the first semester, students observe teachers in local elementary or high schools in order to gain real classroom experience and connect with the local community.

Classes like educational psychology, differentiated learning, cultural geography and political philosophy give students a strong foundation in the basics of education while field experience provides relevant exposure to real classroom teaching methods. Students spend time in public school classrooms an in order to gain professional and practical experience before graduation.

What excites Andrew about getting a degree in social studies education? “I enjoy the thought of being creative with my subject matter,” he says. “Also, it’s a chance to help mold young people and move them towards Christ.”

Each student works with teachers who are related to the student’s licensure level in either elementary, middle or high schools

The Division of Education offers degrees that qualify students for an Arkansas Teaching License in Early Childhood Education (P-4) and Secondary School Education (7-12). The JBU Division of Education is approved by the Arkansas State Department of Education and accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Programs (CAEP).
