Writer/Content Marketing Specialist

Position summary

John Brown University announces a position in University Marketing & Communications (UMC) with a focus on writing to begin as soon as possible. The committee seeks a skilled writer and idea generator who can write effectively to prospective and current students, parents, alumni and donors in both print and online avenues. This individual will take an active role in crafting the university’s content marketing and search optimization strategy.  This role will be part of the creative process and work with the UMC team to broaden JBU’s brand awareness and reach through various communication campaigns and other efforts communicated by UMC.

Position Responsibilities 

  • Manage the content calendar for JBU’s blog and website based on SEO and content marketing best practices
  • Write and recommend effective search engine optimized content for blogs, websites and social media accounts
  • Support and execute projects related to content marketing, content growth and SEO including publishing of faculty, staff and student work
  • Provide guidance and input in managing SEO strategy, such as reviewing and editing web content to ensure effective SEO keyword use, work with Google Analytics and other software to track results and manage reporting
  • Write articles and provide editorial support for the Brown Bulletin, JBU’s official magazine
  • Write press releases and distribute to local and regional media; provide quarterly reports on PR.
  • Create and edit internal employee newsletter and announcements on campus portal
  • Recruit and supervise work-study students, freelance bloggers/writers
  • Write marketing and advertising copy, video and radio scripts as needed for various departments on campus
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience 

  • Knowledge/experience of the editorial process from story idea to final draft
  • Strong narrative writing, grammar and editing skills
  • Ability to conduct effective interviews for writing projects
  • Knowledge in, or ability to learn, content marketing and SEO strategies
  • Ability to do independent research (including interviews) to gather content
  • Ability to write clean copy, quickly, under pressure and on deadline
  • Creativity and motivation to find interesting stories for the different publishing formats

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and the Mac platform
  • Familiarity with AP Stylebook
  • Experience in online or traditional journalism or publishing
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus


  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, English, marketing or related field.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; stand; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
