Position summary

John Brown University (JBU) seeks a 12-month full-time staff member with a strong commitment to serving students in the Walton International Scholarship Program (WISP). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, annually traveling to Central America and Mexico to recruit Walton scholars and mentoring them on campus during their time at JBU. Other responsibilities include the management of the program (e.g., writing annual reports) and collaboration with the members of the Presidential Cabinet to maximize the program’s effectiveness and impact.


Founded in 1985 by Sam and Helen Walton, the WISP provides free college education for the brightest and most capable students from Central America and Mexico. Through a competitive application process, the Walton Program selects students from Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama. After studying in a democratic environment and being exposed to the principles of free enterprise in action, students are required to return to their home countries and use their degrees for the benefit of their home countries.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree
  • A commitment to the integration of the Christian faith and mentoring students
  • A commitment to working with a diverse population of students
  • Must be a committed follower of Jesus Christ
  • Must be qualified to be a Designated School Official (i.e., a permanent resident or U.S. citizen)

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree
  • International living or work experience
  • Demonstrated experience with international students
  • Demonstrated experience in administration and management
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk; stand; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment:  The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal

The employee is expected to adhere to all University policies.


Important Dates

Position begins July 1, 2022. Screening process begins February 21, 2022, and continues until the position is filled.
