Resident Director for Upper Division Housing - Walker Hall & Sheridan Townhouses

Position summary

This position is responsible for leading, planning, and supervising community development activities of Walker Residence Hall and Sheridan Townhouses. Resident Directors cultivate living environments that are safe, conducive to learning, inclusive and which foster community among students based on Christian principles. Walker Residence Hall and Sheridan Townhouses house male and female upper classmen (juniors and seniors). This position requires the Resident Director to live on campus during their appointment.

Position Responsibilities 

  • Direct supervision of the student leaders of the Student Residence Life Staff in Walker Hall and Sheridan Townhouses
  • Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates Student Residence Life staff in assigned areas
  • Invests in the lives of residents on an individual and group basis encouraging holistic growth and shares everyday life with students as appropriate
  • Assists and advises students; becomes familiar with names and needs of students; and helps provide general health and safety support for residents when an illness or injury occurs
  • Promotes Student Life Program in assigned residence hall, including developing a positive Christ-like atmosphere conducive to spiritual and educational development of residents; facilitating development of programs that meet intellectual, spiritual, emotional, occupational, physical, and social needs of students; and providing leadership and guidance for Residence Hall Association
  • Facilitates programming for upperclassmen housing, coordinating with Residence Hall Association (RHA) and Assistant Resident Directors (ARD) and resourcing and equipping students to facilitate programming
  • Coordinates with the Faculty-in-Residence for supplemental support of the Sheridan Townhouses residents
  • Provides resources for RA’s so they can support their residents’ different needs. Being able to relate to students from a variety of backgrounds is essential.
  • Confronts violations of University policies and regulations and, in conjunction with the Dean of Residence Life, takes appropriate disciplinary action, including assessing fines and/or reporting to higher authority
  • Set goals, objectives, and manages available resources to achieve objectives without need for frequent follow-up
  • Manages allotted residence hall budget in conjunction with Dean of Residence Life
  • Coordinates activities with other university departments and offices in a professional manner
  • Teaches with a team in the Student Leadership Class in the spring semester
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Skills and Experience 

  • Minimum of two years of experience in Student Development, housing, Residence Life or working with college age groups in related fields.
  • Background of involvement in working with college students and leaders, in hiring, training of individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrated management and organizational skills and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong relational abilities; goal oriented; ability to confidently make decisions, even unpopular ones.
  • Basic skills with common software packages such as Word, Excel, Power Point, and email.                                         

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • 4 years of experience in Student Development related fields 
  • Demonstrated intercultural experiences such as working with minority groups, international students, or national diverse people’s groups.
  • Knowledge of a second language: such as Spanish, any Asian language, etc.

Education

Bachelor’s degree required.  Master’s degree in higher education, student development, counseling, or a related field preferred.   

Reporting to this Position

Student leadership staff, including two Assistant Resident Directors and 10 Resident Assistants

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk; stand; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment: The noise level in the work environment is sometimes significant.

Irregular work hours: position requires week night and weekend work hours

The employee is expected to adhere to all University policies.
