Position summary

The Payroll Specialist is a full-time position that reports to the Director of Human Resources.  Performing critical human resource functions to further the mission and objectives of the University, the position supports payroll for faculty, staff and students and ensures compliance with federal and state laws.  (Position start date February 1, 2022 or later)

Position Responsibilities 

  • Inputs data and processes time for bi-weekly and workstudy payrolls, enters data for semi-monthly payroll, and prints and distributes checks.  Completes entire payroll as needed when other Human Resources staff are out of the office.
  • Enters new hire information for student and adjunct employees.
  • Works with Financial Aid office to coordinate workstudy students and position maintenance.
  • Assists with preparation of personnel action forms and faculty contracts.
  • Processes garnishments requests as they arrive, remits garnishment withholdings each pay period.
  • Submits new hire reporting to the state of Arkansas.
  • Handles all state unemployment insurance claims and correspondence.
  • Answers audit questions related to payroll procedures for the annual audit of the health plan and the 403(b) retirement plan.
  • Maintains records and policies related to the I-9 process.
  • Provides timely responses to inquiries at payroll@jbu.edu.
  • Answers questions from employees relating to payroll issues and supports other departments in budget tracking. 
  • Manages out of state payroll entry and processes including coordination with third party vendor.
  • Organizes equipment and supply needs for Early Registration and Registration.
  • Assists with W-2 and 1095-C processes.
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Experience 

  • Working knowledge of PC applications with computer software experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Prior experience with human resources or payroll is strongly preferred.
  • Spanish language a plus                                               


Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.  Professional certification in Human Resources or Payroll desired.

Physical demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk; stand; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment:  The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal
