Maintenance Craftsman

Position summary

Responsible for assigned maintenance and repair of University facilities and equipment.  Performs a variety of maintenance and repair services in several different crafts on building, machinery or equipment.  Applies skill, experience and general knowledge of theory to a wide range of maintenance tasks.  Troubleshoots and diagnoses repairs needed.  Performs preventative maintenance tasks to ensure efficiency.  Uses all shop machinery and hand tools.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Meets frequently with Assistant Director of Facilities Services to determine duties and set priorities.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing, including sinks, tubs, toilets, drinking fountains, water lines, valves, steam pipes, etc.
  • Installs and repairs HVAC equipment, including fan motors, pumps, exhaust fans, air handlers, valves, etc.
  • Installs and repairs electrical fixtures, including switches, receptacles, extension cords, motors, ballasts, etc.
  • Installs and repairs appliances, including stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, dryers, microwave ovens, garbage disposals, etc.
  • Installs and repairs doors, windows, screens, door closures, locks, floor tile, ceiling tile, roofs, etc. Repairs and maintains vehicles.
  • Orders and picks up maintenance supplies from vendors, regularly checks mechanical rooms for malfunctioning equipment, moves furniture, works on event setups, repairs roofs and gutters, and performs other routine repairs as needed.
  • Supervises work-study students assigned to maintenance.
  • Performs minor carpentry.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience: 

  • Four or more years maintenance experience in the following areas: plumbing, electrical, and machinery repair, HVAC repair.
  • Mechanical aptitude, knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, appliance repair, and HVAC repair.


  • High school graduate. 
  • Post high school courses in plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, etc., preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk; stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment:  The noise level in the work environment may require ear protection.

The employee is expected to adhere to all University policies.
