Position summary

The Lab Manager is a part-time position reporting to the Chemical Hygiene Officer. The Lab Manager maintains oversight of Bell Science Hall chemistry and physics laboratories to ensure safe and efficient laboratory experiences for students, and serves as the assistant Chemical Hygiene Officer for Bell Science Hall.

Position Responsibilities 

  • Supervising work-study students in the preparation and cleanup of the General Chemistry laboratory courses and laboratory.
  • Supervising work-study students in the preparation and cleanup of the Physics laboratory courses and laboratory.
  • Servicing basic equipment such as the purified water systems, balances, and pH meters.
  • Maintaining the chemical stockroom, the chemical inventory and safety data sheets.
  • Basic safety checks of first aid supplies, showers and eyewashes.
  • Handling and cataloging hazardous waste.
  • The Lab Manager will serve as the assistant Chemical Hygiene Officer for Bell Science Hall. These duties include assisting with the following:
    • Coordinating program requirements with administrators and other employees to develop and implement appropriate chemical hygiene policies and practices.
    • Monitoring procurement and use of chemicals in the lab, including determining that facilities and training levels are adequate for the chemicals in use.
    • Performing regular formal chemical hygiene and housekeeping inspections including inspections of emergency equipment.
    • Assisting project directors in developing precautions and adequate facilities.
    • Maintaining current knowledge concerning the legal requirements of regulated substances in the laboratory.
    • Reviewing and implementing improvements to the Chemical Hygiene Plan on an annual basis.
    • Maintaining overall responsibility for the laboratory operation.
    • Ensuring that workers know and follow the chemical hygiene rules.
    • Determining the proper level of personnel protective equipment (PPE) required and ensuring it is available and in working order.
    • Ensuring that appropriate training has been provided to employees.
    • Monitor the waste disposal program.

Required Training

The Lab Manager will obtain and maintain Global Harmonization Standard training (GHS) and hazardous waste handling training.

Education

Bachelor's Degree; Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; stand; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment:  The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal

The employee is expected to adhere to all University policies.
