Field Placement Director

Position summary

The Field Placement Director is an administrative and/or clinical staff position whose primary function is providing strategic management and oversight of JBU Graduate Counseling Department’s clinical internship and professional development experiences.  This position serves as the primary liaison between JBU’s Graduate Counseling Department and professional counseling agencies and internship sites across the Northwest Arkansas (NWA), Central Arkansas, Northeast Oklahoma, and Southeast Missouri regions.  This position reports directly to the Graduate Counseling Department Head.  The primary office for this position is at the JBU Main campus in Siloam Springs, AR.  Travel is required between the primary office and JBU campuses in Rogers, Fort Smith, and Little Rock, AR.     


  • Manage, coordinate, and approve internship site placement within the Graduate Counseling Department program across all campus locations.
  • Develop and maintain positive referral, marketing, networking, and site relationships while expanding the database of diverse internship site possibilities in the region.
  • Assist with internship orientations for JBU students, sites, and site supervisors.
  • Maintain consistent and direct communication with internship sites and supervisors, including conducting regular site and supervisor visits. Travel throughout the region is required.
  • Manage site and affiliation agreements/contracts with sites/agencies/supervisors.
  • Manage internship records, record-keeping, and informational technology, including site/student data, activity logs, evaluations, and contracts.   
  • Manage and implement professional development (continuing education) training and comprehensive exam delivery, including oversight of the Graduate Counseling Department’s account with the National Board for Certified Counselors.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Clinical Director, Clinic Coordinators, and Graduate Counseling Department faculty to best serve student and program needs.
  • Manage and supervise assigned Graduate Assistants, work-study student, and clinical staff in duties related to internship placement.
  • Other duties and travel as assigned.

The Field Placement Director can perform fee-for-service counseling related activities in the Siloam Springs CARE Clinic at no cost/rent under the direction of the Executive CARE Clinic Director.  These services must be performed outside of the FPD’s full-time responsibilities and cannot exceed 10 hours per week.  The FPD may be considered the “on-site” supervisor in the event they are performing clinical services during CARE Clinic business hours.  

Weekly Time Allocation: 

  • 70% Administrative Duties
  • 20% Travel
  • 10% Site/Community Relations


  • This position reports to and is supervised by the Graduate Counseling Department Head. 

Education and Certification:

  • Minimum of Master’s degree in Counseling or related field.
  • Licensed (or license eligible) as a counselor (or marriage and family therapist) in the state of Arkansas.
  • Relevant supervisor experience and credentials is preferred.


  • A minimum of three years clinical or administrative experience working in human services, counseling, or social work settings/agencies.
  • Marketing, networking, and community relations experience is beneficial.
  • Director or leadership experience is preferred.

  • Strong administration skills, including planning, organizing, assessing, and revising systems, processes, and procedures; effective verbal and written communication skills; effective team leadership skills; ability to use various clinic/office technologies; ability to navigate academic learning management systems; strong interpersonal skills; effective peer collaboration skills; ability to effectively connect with and maintain positive working relationships with external constituents; proven ability to teach and train others effectively; ability to deliver successful presentations to diverse groups.

  • An organized, timely, dependable, and hard-working individual who can balance administrative tasks with personal/relational interaction.  Must possess an internal drive to achieve departmental benchmarks related to the position, while being a positive influence on peers, students, and external constituents/site supervisors.  Must be a team player with a servant attitude who is committed to excellence and ongoing personal growth (professionally and spiritually).  Must commit to the Articles of Faith, Mission and Objectives of John Brown University while being a role model for others through the active demonstration of a Christian faith in both personal and professional contexts.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; stand; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment:  The noise level in the work environment is sometimes significant.
