Dean of Student Care/Director of the Counseling Center

Position summary

Management of traditional undergraduate campus student care.  Responsible for management of the university student counseling center including providing direct counseling services, as needed.  In addition, the Dean of Student Care will provide collaborative oversight to student health service and career services.  Additional supervisory areas may include, orientation and/or student activities.  This position will be part of the leadership team in Student Development.

Position Responsibilities 

  • Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff.
  • Develops, maintains and executes short- and long-term strategic plans for overall areas of responsibilities.
  • Sets goals, objectives and manages available resources to achieve objectives, without need for frequent follow up.
  • Partners with faculty and staff to develop departmental vision and accomplish goals.
  • Communicates with JBU community concerning mission and objectives from the areas of responsibilities.
  • Takes an active role in routine meetings, goals, and tasks for Student Development Department.
  • Works closely with Vice President for Student Development to provide collaborative leadership to the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience 

  • Licensed counselor.
  • Counseling, teaching/presenting and confrontation skills.
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong interpersonal/relational skills.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills. Computer word processing and data management skills.
  • Three or more years of supervisory experience, preferably in student development.


  • Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or equivalent.

Reporting to this position

  • Admin. Asst. for Student Development; Counselors; Nurse; Career Development; and potentially Director of Student Activities and Orientation.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk; stand; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment:  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
