Classroom Technology Support Specialist

Position summary

This position will provide technical support for John Brown University’s classroom technology, which includes classroom instructor workstations, audio/visual equipment, integrated software, conference rooms and other spaces featuring audio/video conferencing and projection systems.  A successful candidate will have the necessary skills to investigate, troubleshoot, test, recommend, and integrate new technologies for university use.  Additional responsibilities include providing training for classroom technology and support for short-term and long-term deployments.  A major component of this position will require the individual to deploy new equipment in learning and meeting spaces on a regular maintenance schedule.

Position Responsibilities 

  • Troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve technical problems in classrooms and other venues (problems may be related to, but not limited to, projectors, A/V switcher/controllers, document cameras, computers, video cameras, speakers).
  • Provide technical support for digital signage and displays.
  • Research equipment and work with vendors to develop recommendations and specifications for the University.
  • Log service requests, document troubleshooting steps, and problem resolution details in ticketing system.
  • Monitor, test, and track classroom equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Integrate, install and maintain applicable classroom and conference room technology, including control systems.
  • Coordinate with Director of Client Services to provide consultative and design services to clients with regards to classroom technology.
  • Maintain inventory of classroom technology equipment.
  • Assist faculty, staff, and students via email, over the phone, and in person with classroom technology.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or two years of equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in instructional media and educational technologies.
  • Knowledge of classroom technology installation practices and ability to install these technologies.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal guidance.
  • Strong ability to communicate well with others both verbally and in writing.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Possess core understanding of common video signals and audio signal flows.
  • Working knowledge of Crestron systems (or similar control systems).


High school graduate required.  Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.

Reporting to this Position

No direct reports, but often working closely with and directing student employees on the Client Services and Technical Services teams.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to bend, stoop, reach, lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Must have manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other equipment. Vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 

Work environment: The noise level in the work environment can fluctuate but is usually minimal.
