John Brown University seeks a full-time faculty member for a shared position between the departments of Communication and Music & Theatre to begin July 1, 2018.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to teaching courses in theatre (includes performance and production techniques, history, and stage management/directing), teaching voice and speech, directing drama productions (includes all aspects of set design, technical production, assigning students to backstage roles and working with student assistant directors), and coaching debate/forensics (includes weekend travel, driving assistance, tournament hosting and administration of activities). Additional responsibilities include advising of students, recruiting for debate/forensics and theatre, and service on university committees.


The Departments of Communication and Music & Theatre are housed in the Division of Communication and Fine Arts, serve undergraduate students with a strong commitment to a Christian liberal arts mission, and advocate and promote student creativity and excellence for future academic endeavors and their various professions. These departments are uniquely designed to explore students’ giftings and talents and are among the few disciplines where the entire student body is invited and welcomed to participate. The Department of Music & Theatre offers courses which provide a well-rounded education for those wishing to enter the music profession as artists, teachers, supervisors, church musicians, and musicians in other fields. The Department of Communication strives to produce tomorrow’s industry professionals, civic leaders and lifelong learners who are dedicated to serving and making a difference in a domestic and global context. The department currently offers emphases in Digital Journalism & Civic Engagement, Media Production, Media Communication and Public Relations.


An earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or related discipline is preferred, masters required. Experience teaching a basic public speaking course and other communication courses as well as coaching collegiate debate and forensics is preferred. Experience in theatre education, production and artistic direction (casting, directing, stage managing, costume design, set-design, audio-visual platforms, training/course design) is necessary. Effective teaching experience in higher education, evidence of scholarly potential, and a commitment to Christian higher education are essential. The successful candidate is expected to have a passion for teaching and the ability to provide service to the department, college, university and community.


 A competitive salary exists which will be commensurate with training and/or experience.
