About the MFA

Collaborative Design Program

THERE IS A VAST NEED FOR MULTI-FACETED GLOBALLY RESPONSIBLE VISUAL COMMUNICATORS. Ministry and non-profits often do not have the insight, understanding, training, or resources to integrate design thinking and visual communication effectively. JBU’s MFA program aims to prepare people with the necessary skills and desire to help organizations. Within the non-profit and corporate arena, organizations need well-trained, ethical design thinkers and creative problem-solvers to help them move forward and set them apart. At JBU, we aim to position creative, well trained, visual communicators in decision-making positions within organizations where they can influence positive business and visual strategy practices.
This is not a Studio Art MFA, nor is it a MFA in Graphic Design, Photography, Digital cinema or Illustration, It is a MFA that focuses on the integration of all visual communication and design thinking methods steeped heavily in the design research and practice, collaborating with non-profits and ministries while focusing on global strategies and service learning. Based on the interest and applications that we receive, we will actively seek to accept students with a variety of backgrounds including (but not limited to) the aforementioned.

Program Flexibility

We understand that financial obligations, family, work, and other responsibilities prevent everyone from enrolling full-time. Therefore, JBU has strategically developed a MFA program that enables participants the flexibility to schedule their studies around their lives. This will allow students to take classes in-person, via video connection, and online. Including a two-week campus visit in May during the first year and a four-week partnership during the summer before the last year, the MFA spans three years and is ideal for the working professional or creative thinker who needs to conserve valuable financial and time resources. The program can also be completed as a full-residency program with the possibility of being awarded a teaching assistantship.

Summer Residency

MFA students will be required to be on campus for a two-week residency after their first year of study, and they will be recommended to travel abroad for an internship, to their partnering ministry or non-profit organization, for two to four weeks during the summer before their third year of study.

Class Location

Classes will be located on JBU’s main campus in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, or at the JBU Rogers Center.  Because this is a flexible program, MFA students will be able to participate in most classes from their own location via technology.
