Special Education Academy

John Brown University is welcoming P-12 (K-6, 4-8 ELA/Math/Science, or 7-12 ELA/Math/Science – must be currently teaching in one of the stated licensed areas) teachers to apply for the 2022-2023 Special Education Resource Teacher Academy. The University has received a grant from the Arkansas Department of Education that will allow teachers to have the opportunity to earn 12 hours of graduate credit, paid for via the scholarship grant. Along with this, teachers may earn a Special Education Resource/Co-Teacher endorsement upon passing the Special Education Praxis, which is paid for via the scholarship grantThere are NO registration fees to apply! 

JBU will offer courses in person at the JBU campus in Siloam Springs as well as hybrid (in-person/asynchronous) courses both at the JBU main campus and online. During the Academy, teachers will take 4 courses addressing foundations of special education, examination of a variety of disabilities identified by IDEA 2004, instructional strategies designed for students with special needs, and behavior management and assessment of students with disabilities. Participants will have the opportunity to work with and learn from experts in the field.

The first summer session on the JBU main campus for face-to-face learning will run June 6-10 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. 

Lodging will be available by request if traveling longer than one hour to the JBU campus.

The second summer session will be online with possible required Zoom sessions and will run June 27 – August 19.

For the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters, classes will be held once a month during a Saturday session and will meet on the JBU campus in Siloam Springs. The dates are as follows:

Course #3 Saturday dates will be Aug. 27, 2022; Sept. 24, 2022; Oct. 22, 2022; and Dec. 3, 2022. 

Course #4 Saturday dates will be Jan. 14, 2023; Feb. 4, 2023; March 4, 2023; and April 1, 2023.
