Program Length & Course Format

Courses will be taught online in a full-semester format, though students will have the option of taking classes in-person at JBU's main campus in Siloam Springs. A student will be able to complete the entire program in 12 months.

Learn the history, methods, and application of classical Christian education.

The Graduate Certificate in Classical Christian Studies is a 9 credit hour program (3 classes). Following the 9-hour program, students may choose to complete a 3-hour apprenticeship that may be fulfilled by serving at a classical school. To earn the certificate, students will need to complete the following courses:

  • CCS 7003 The History of Liberal Arts: Following the history of great ideas in Western tradition from Plato to Dorothy Sayers, students will evaluate the lost tools of learning, discuss the meaning of liberty and art, and why this narrative matters to contemporary educational practice.
  • CCS 7103 Classical and Christian Pedagogy: Students will learn the trivium (grammar, logic, rhetoric), how to implement Socratic method, how to teach writing as imitation, why repetition matters, and how to assess for wisdom (in addition to information and skill).
  • CCS 7203 Philosophy of Classical Education: Through close reading Aristotle, Augustine, Rousseau, Freud, and C.S. Lewis, students will identify the conceptions of human nature and the good life that inform educational practice while examining the relationship between education and philosophy.
  • CCS 7993 Apprenticeship in Classical Christian Studies (optional): Students may choose to complete a 3-hour apprenticeship that may be fulfilled by serving at a Classical school.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university OR be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at John Brown University with junior or senior standing and possess a cumulative undergraduate grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 or higher.
  • Complete an online application. NOTE: This is a new program coming Fall 2020. 
  • No entrance exam required
