Linda Casey created the Lola Maddux Woodard Memorial Endowed Scholarship in memory of her mother, a JBU 1938 alumna. Lola’s educational pursuits were greatly influenced by her paternal grandmother Lou Barton Hancock Maddux. Maddux supported the spiritual and educational efforts of John Brown, Sr., but her most lasting contribution was instilling in Lola a desire and lifelong love of education. Lola created the Lou B. Hancock Maddux Endowed Scholarship to honor her grandmother. In only three years, Lola earned a Bachelor of Science in journalism from JBU. She worked on campus as a student to help pay tuition but also had to borrow funds. After graduation, she continued working in the business office at JBU and then in Houston, making monthly payments on her loans. Lola married and had two children. She was an elementary teacher for more than 40 years, then founded and directed a summer camp for special-needs children along with her husband. After retiring, she continued to work as a substitute and homeschooling teacher well into her 80s. Lola was a great believer in higher education and the John Brown University experience.
