Zoa Layton created the William Douglas Layton Endowed Scholarship in honor of her husband. Doug graduated from high school in Garnett, KS, and also from Coffeyville Community Junior College. He attended Kansas University until he began working as an oil producer with Layton Oil Company. He retired from the oil industry in 1999. First in Doug’s life was his faith in God, which was present in business and at home. For five years he served as a lay minister at the Niotaze Methodist Church. He also spent time working with Dr. Frank Laubach’s “Each One Teach One” ministry in Kenya, Africa, and the U.S.

Doug Layton served as a JBU Trustee from 1963 until 1999. He passed away in 2001. He was a great student recruiter. His concern, diligence and service as a member of the Board is remembered and appreciated. A favorite quote of Doug’s is: “Selfishness is the suicide of greatness.” John Brown University will remember Doug for his generosity, joyful spirit and his kind and loving heart.
