Donor-funded scholarship requirements

Ephesians 5:20 states that we are to ". . . always give thanks for all things. . ."

As good stewards of the resources that have been given to JBU, we want to consistently and appropriately thank alumni and friends who give financially to JBU and report back to them about how their gifts are being used. One of the very best ways to thank our donors is to allow them to hear directly from you, the student who is receiving the direct benefit from their gifts.

To that end, we ask ALL JBU scholarship recipients to do three things, each of which is described in more detail below.

By clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid offer letter, you are agreeing to abide by the following need-based scholarship requirements. You agree to:

  1. Write a thank you letter (or letters, as needed) to the donor(s) who support this scholarship;
  2. Not solicit or contact any JBU donors for any reason without the prior written approval of the Scholarship Office. This includes, but is not limited to, contacting donors to seek further financial support for personal needs, personal, professional or academic projects, or contacting donors for any other purpose;
  3. Allow JBU to use your name, photo, city, state and country of origin, area of study and the specific dollar amount of the scholarship award to which this release applies in reporting to our donors (and the public at large) how gifts to JBU are being used.

The thank-you letter

A thank-you note is required of you for this scholarship each year that you receive the scholarship. The Thank You Note is to be written in your own words, addressed to the donor (for example: "Dear Mr. Jones," or, "Dear Friends," if the scholarship is given by someone who wishes to remain anonymous), and should include, at a minimum, a brief biography about yourself (your name, major, classification) and what you hope to do after graduating from John Brown University. The note should be personally signed by you.

Information will be sent to you within the first 2-3 weeks after your arrival at JBU for the fall semester detailing the best way to meet this requirement. If you have any questions about this process, Sherry Miller can be reached by phone at (479) 524-7330 and by email at smiller@jbu.edu .

By clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid award letter, you are agreeing to abide by the above requirements and to complete the above-described thank you note(s) in a timely fashion. If you fail to abide by the above requirements or fail to complete the required thank you note(s) in a timely fashion you also agree and understand that this scholarship may be removed from your financial aid package (at JBU's discretion) and that you will be personally responsible to make up the difference from your own resources.

Refrain from inappropriate contact with JBU donors

For consistency and appropriateness, please only contact individual JBU donors through the JBU Scholarship Office. Do not contact JBU donors directly and do not solicit or contact any JBU donors without the prior written approval of the Scholarship Office. This includes, but is not limited to, contacting donors to seek further financial support for personal needs, personal, professional or academic projects, or contacting donors for any other purpose.

By clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid award letter, you are agreeing not to contact JBU donors for any reason without express written permission from the Scholarship Office. If you do contact JBU donors without express written permission from the Scholarship Office, you agree and understand that their scholarship may be removed from your financial aid package (at JBU's discretion) and that you will be personally responsible to make up the difference from your own resources.

Release of your picture and personal information

An important part of our stewardship practice is to report back to our donors in various ways with specific information about our student scholarship recipients.

By clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid award letter, you are agreeing to allow JBU to use your name, your photo, your city, state and country of origin, your area of study, extra-curricular activities in which you may be involved and the specific dollar amount awarded to you from this scholarship in reporting to our donors (and the public at large) how gifts to JBU are being used. If releasing any of the above information could cause a security risk for you or any of your family members, please contact Sherry Miller in the Scholarship Office (479-524-7330; smiller@jbu.edu) before clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid award letter.
