Jill Briscoe

Spiritual Emphasis Week: Jill Briscoe

(September 6-8)

Jill Briscoe has written more than forty books, traveled on every continent teaching and encouraging, served on the boards of Christianity Today and World Relief and now acts as Executive Editor of a magazine for women called Just Between Us. Jill can be heard regularly on the worldwide media ministry called Telling the Truth. This is Jill’s fourth visit to JBU.

Marilyn Nelson

Giving Voice, Festival of Writing and the Arts: Marilyn Nelson

(September 22)

Marilyn Nelson is the author or translator of over 24 books. Her latest collection of poems is Faster Than Light, winner of the 2013 Milton Kessler Poetry Award. She was awarded the 2012 Frost Medal, the Poetry Society of America's most prestigious award, for "distinguished lifetime achievement in poetry." In January 2013 she was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Nelson is a professor emerita of English at the University of Connecticut, was founder/director and host of Soul Mountain Retreat, and held the office of Poet Laureate of the State of Connecticut from 2001 to 2006.

Don Reed

Don Reed

(October 4)

Don Reed has been a pastor for more than four decades, and currently volunteers at Fellowship Bible Church in Lowell, Arkansas, in the areas of teaching (personal finance and estate design) and small group development. For the last decade he has focused on helping people live generous lives because of God’s generosity to them. He is also University Chaplain Rod Reed’s father.

Greg and Erin Smalley

CHR Relationships Week: Greg and Erin Smalley

(October 11, 13)

Greg Smalley serves as Vice President of Marriage and Family Formation at Focus on the Family. Prior to joining Focus, Greg and Erin worked for the Center for Relationship Enrichment at John Brown University, and Greg was the President of the National Institute of Marriage. He is the author of 17 books including Fight Your Way to a Better Marriage. Erin is a program manager at Focus on the Family and develops content for the marriage department. She has written a number of books, including Before You Plan Your Wedding, Plan Your Marriage with her husband, Greg. The Smalleys come as guests of the Center for Healthy Relationships.

Vincent Bacote is Associate Professor of Theology and Director of the Center for Applied Christian Ethics at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He is the author of The Political Disciple: A Theology of Public Life and has had articles appear in magazines such as Books and Culture and Christianity Today. He is a fellow of the Center for Public Justice, member of the Evangelical Theological Society and the Society of Christian Ethics, and lives in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, with his family. This will be his third visit to JBU.

Michael Yankoski is a writer, itinerant speaker, and urban homesteader who dreams of one day becoming a competent woodworker, musician, potter and sailor. He is the author of four books, including The Sacred Year: Mapping the Soulscape of Spiritual Practice. His visit is co-sponsored by the JBU Honors Scholars Program.

Donnie Smith is President and Chief Executive Officer at Tyson Foods, Inc. He guides Tyson Foods to be a company with a conscience, focused on feeding the world great, affordable food, while also making a positive difference in people’s lives. He comes as a guest of Soderquist Leadership.

Carl Wilkens

World Awareness Week: Carl Wilkens

(November 8)

Activist, author, and humanitarian Carl Wilkens was the only American to remain in Kigali, Rwanda throughout the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Working together with Rwandan colleagues, they helped save the lives of hundreds. He now speaks in schools and universities around the world about Rwanda’s examples of courage, resilience, and reconciliation. His visit is co-sponsored by the JBU Honors Scholars Program.

Dave and Mel Murray

World Awareness Week: Dave and Mel Murray

(November 10)

JBU alumni Dave and Mel Murray may live and work in Siloam Springs, but their passion is for marginalized people in the world, specifically in India and the surrounding region. Mel is the founder of a block printing company named JOYN, which produces beautiful, block-printed textiles handmade by artisans who struggle with addiction, abuse, and other challenges. Dave is the founder of Dehradun Guitar Company, which creates custom handmade instruments and sustainable livelihoods for young men, many of whom grew up in poverty and are recovering from addictions.
