The Roller Coaster Called Life

First-Year Reflections

About the Blog

We know, we know...The Beanie Blog is a strange name!  Did you know new JBU students wore beanies upon arrival way back in the 60's?  We enjoy that it is a part of our history and that it can remain just that...HISTORY!!  Here is some blurry proof!!

This blog was created in 2016 to provide a helpful resource for our current first-year students, parents of those students, and prospective students.  The first year is full of transitions as students adapt to a new place, new people, and have new experiences.  There are often very high highs and low lows that characterize the year as students get used to life at JBU.  This blog will hopefully help those reading it better understand what first-year students at JBU are experiencing at various points of the year and from various perspectives as contributors share their thoughts and reflections.  We hope this allows you to share in their experiences, ask great questions, and support them well as they trek through the year!

College, also known as the best four years of our lives, is so much more than just that. As I was getting ready to come to school I was thrilled. I could not wait for this next step of my life. Yet it was not a walk in the park by any means. My first week of school I was stung by bees on both ankles, which ended up swelling, got a flat tire and lost my phone. I was five hours away from home and sometimes the loneliness was unbearable. I say this not to scare anyone, but to be blatantly honest. Even though college is a blast it is also incredibly hard. There were and still are moments where the fear is enough to swallow me alive, yet the story does not stop there. Through the fear, anxiety, and pain I found God. The struggles gave me the weakness I needed to cling to God, and through Him I realized that these next years at college were going to be amazing. He gave me incredible friends, that got me through hard times and made me laugh like I have never laughed before. Although it has been hard, I would not trade these moments for anything. My dear friends, I know this year has been hard, but with God all things are possible, and if you cling to Him you will find that there is no better place to be.
