Apply for an art scholarship

Scholarship details

Who can apply?

You must be a new, first-time student at JBU majoring in art & illustration, digital cinema, graphic design, photography or visual effects.

Students should complete the JBU admissions application before submitting an art scholarship application.

What factors are considered in awarding the scholarship?

Scholarships will be awarded based on a portfolio review, JBU faculty recommendation, academic standing and personal character.

To set up a portfolio review meeting to ask one of our professors for their input, please contact April Shirley. This can be done in person or on Zoom but is entirely optional. Some scholarships are also determined by financial need.

When can I apply?

There are two opportunities: fall submissions are accepted for roughly two weeks, typically in October. Spring submissions are accepted typically in January. The exact dates are determined each fall.

How do I apply for the art scholarship?
  1. Make sure you have applied to attend JBU.
  2. Complete the art scholarship application. (Link will be added when the scholarship is open.)
  3.  Create a digital portfolio of your best work in any medium you choose: painting, drawing, design, photography, cinema, etc.  Submit your application NO LATER than 5 p.m. on the date of the deadline so we can send you a link to upload your digital portfolio.

What are the guidelines for the digital portfolio?

This is a digital portfolio; therefore, it must be submitted digitally. If your work was not created digitally, you must photograph or scan it. You may only submit a maximum of 12 images. These images must be in the JPEG format with a maximum file size of 10MB. Video work may be submitted, but you may only submit up to five video files each with a maximum file size of 100 MB. If you have larger work you may upload your work to Vimeo or YouTube and send us the link.

When submitting your portfolio, you must name each file with your first initial followed by a period and your last name and then a sequential number (Example: K.Smith8.jpeg, K.Smith9.jpeg). If you would like, you can attach a separate document that lists the type of media used, size of art, date of completion, and if it is an abstract piece.

Whom do I contact if I have questions?

Feel free to contact April Shirley, the Visual Arts Department Administrative Assistant, or call 479-524-7160. Or you may contact our Admissions Office at 1-877-JBU-INFO or jbuinfo@jbu.edu if you have any questions.
