Accelerated Learning Lab

Learning Lab and Academic Coaching for SSS Members

The Accelerated Learning Lab (ALLab) is a place set apart for members of Student Support Services (SSS) where they can receive academic support and access resources. This includes sessions with learning coaches, use of the computer lab with specialized software, free printing, study space, a textbook library, and resources to assess and improve study skills.

Active SSS members can use their JBU student ID to scan into the ALLab when the LRC building is open.

What is a Learning Coach?

A learning coach is a person who, in a structured educational setting, facilitates a learning activity. While there are many similarities between a learning coach and a tutor, a tutor is generally more focused on developing content proficiency, whereas the goal of coaching is the overall academic equipping of the student. Learning coaches guide the students in developing metacognitive self-awareness and assist them in learning effective study strategies and coping skills based on validated research. Learning coaches do provide content clarification and practice for students as a tutor does; they do not introduce new material or reteach previous material.

Learning coaches are available for one-on-one and group sessions, as well as during drop-in hours, to assist students with most classes. One-on-one sessions are available by appointment by filling out the Tutoring Request Form. If you are interested in becoming a learning coach, fill out the Become a Tutor/Learning Coach Application.
