Choosing a Major

Biology Major

Students majoring in Biology can choose one of the following three options: the Pre-Professional Option, Allied Health Option, or Field Biology/Naturalist Option.

  • Pre-Professional Option
    This option is for students interested in preparing for graduate school in biology or a professional school in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or optometry.
  • Allied Health Option
    This option is for students interested in preparing for a professional school in one of the many allied health fields such as nursing, physician's assistant, pharmacy, physical therapy, or occupational therapy, etc.
  • Field Biology/Naturalist Option
    This option is for students interested in pursuing a career in field-type work such as wildlife management, environmental education and policy, government and park services, camp and recreation, missions, etc.

Chemistry Major

This option is for students interested in working as a lab technician and/or preparing for graduate school in chemistry, or professional school in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or pharmacy.

Biochemistry Major

This option is for students interested in working as a lab technician and/or preparing for graduate school in biochemistry/molecular biology, or professional school in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or pharmacy. It is basically a chemistry major combined with a minor in Biology and it differs from the Biology pre-professional track option in the physics and math areas.

Environmental Science

This option is for those interested in careers in the various areas of environmental science. There is more Chemistry in this program than in the Field/Naturalist Option in Biology.

Exercise Studies Major

This option is for those students interested in careers of individual exercise programs and fitness testing.

Mathematics Major

This option is for students interested in teaching or working in a variety of areas that use mathematical thinking to solve problems.

Sports Medicine Major

This option prepares the student for further study in physical therapy and athletic training.
