A recovery celebration reception was held yesterday for Dahye (Sarah) Kim, who was seriously injured when she was hit by a car in January. The reception was held in Mayfield Residence Hall at JBU, where Dahye lived prior to the accident. Dahye’s friends, various faculty and staff, JBU President Chip Pollard and representatives from the Siloam Springs Fire and Rescue attended the celebration. Dahye, who was joined by her father, thanked everyone for their prayers and support during her recovery. She will return to Korea in the coming weeks to continue her recovery. Dahye told the group she plans to return to JBU as soon as she can to finish her degree.

Feb. 27 Update on Sarah

Tracy Balzer visited Dahye (Sarah) in the hospital yesterday and reports that she shows continued improvement. She is able to sit up, work on a laptop and is now fully verbal. There is great hope that she will be released from the hospital very soon. God has clearly answered the many prayers on her behalf. Please continue to pray for recovery and give praise for her improvement.

Eunbit thanked everyone for their prayers and support as she recovers from her injuries.

Feb. 15 Update on Student Accident Victims

SARAH: From Tracy Balzer: "Dahye (Sarah) has made remarkable progress! Though she is still in ICU, today she is sitting up in a recliner next to her bed and smiled with happiness when friends walked in the room! Medical apparatus is still keeping her from being verbal, but she shapes words to communicate. This is a tremendous answer to prayer."

EUNBIT: Eunbit (Gina) was brought back to Siloam Springs on Monday. She is recuperating nicely and will continue physical therapy at a local hospital as an outpatient. Her mother will remain with her until they are both able to return to Seoul, South Korea in approximately three weeks. Gina is managing her own visits with friends via email and Facebook.

Feb. 10 Update on Sarah

Friday, February 10, 2012 Sarah (Dahye) Kim continues to show encouraging signs of improvement.  She is moving her arms and legs voluntarily, and undergoing therapy for each leg. She is awake much of the time and shows signs of recognition by squeezing hands, giving the "ok" sign when asked, or a small wave goodbye. Family and JBU staff show her pictures of friends and she responds attentively.

Feb. 5 Update on Student Accident Victims

Sunday, February 5, 2012 Gina’s mother arrived Thursday afternoon and is now with Gina.  Gina is continuing rehabilitation.

Sarah had surgery on her broken hip.  She remains in critical but stable condition and is recovering slowly with significant signs of improvement.

Jan. 30 Update on Student Accident Victims

Monday, January 30, 2012, 1:30 p.m.Eunbit (Gina) continues to make steady improvement. After two sessions of rehabilitation, she was able to move around the hospital in a specialized wheel chair over the weekend. Eunbit is in good spirits and is preparing herself for a long road of rehabilitation. She will not be able to place any weight on her legs for 8 to 10 weeks. Eunbit is looking forward to the arrival of her mother on Thursday and said she feels blessed and encouraged by the cards from her friends at JBU and the Korean Church in Rogers.

Dahye (Sarah) remains in stable but critical condition. She continues to show small signs of positive change. The brain swelling is clearly minimized and stable now.  She moved her arms and legs over the weekend, but it’s unknown if the movement was voluntary or involuntary because the medication keeping her in a coma has not fully worn off.  Dahye's father reported that upon touching her right shoulder, Dahye's hand moved.

Thank you for continuing to pray for the recovery of Gina and Sarah.

Jan. 26 Update on Sarah

Thursday, January 26, 2012, 4:00 p.m.Dahye (Sarah) remains in critical but stable condition.  The pressure levels on her brain have stabilized over the past few days, allowing for the medical team to begin reducing the medication keeping Sarah in a 'protected, medically-induced coma.'  The next step will be for doctors to assess any head/brain damage and develop a treatment plan.

JBU staff who have visited Sarah said she seems to be in a restful state and that gives comfort to the family. Because of her fragile condition, the hospital is not allowing visitors outside of family and those who are there for logistical or translation support. Patience is appreciated from those who would like to visit Sarah at this time.

Jan. 25 Update on Student Accident Victims

Wednesday, January 25, 2012, 3:45 p.m.Gina remains stable, conscious and alert. The cards and posters made by JBU students and her computer have been delivered to Gina and she is enjoying being able to feel connected with her friends and family. She continues to receive medication to help with pain and has begun to work with an occupational therapist in rehabilitation.

Sarah: The medical professionals continue to monitor the pressure on her brain. They are hopeful that the medication will continue to work and that the “peak” of the pressure on the brain is behind her. Sarah remains in critical but stable condition. If the pressure remains stabilized, then the doctors will begin the process of bringing Sarah out of the induced coma to take the next step on the long road to recovery.

Jan. 24 Update on Student Accident Victims

January 24, 2012, 2 p.m.Update on the Condition of Eunbit (Gina) Oh and Dahye (Sarah) Kim

Gina continues to progress well in a Springfield hospital.  Please pray that her fractured pelvis will heal properly (so far she has not needed surgery) and that doctors will have wisdom for next steps for her in terms of her rehabilitation and release from the hospital.

Sarah’s condition is significantly more serious and she is being treated in the neurological ICU in a Tulsa hospital. Visitors are still limited to family and JBU staff because of her delicate condition. The critical issue for her right now is the swelling on her brain. Please pray that the swelling will not increase and that doctors will soon feel confident that it is under control. Sarah is currently unconscious and will be until her brain swelling has stabilized, which will likely be another few days to a week. All of the cards and letters and posters that have been made for Sarah now surround her in her room and her family is so grateful for your prayers and support.

Jan. 23 Update on Student Accident Victims

January 23, 2012, 3:45 p.m.On Friday evening two international JBU students from Korea, Eunbit (Gina) Oh and Dayhe (Sarah) Kim, were injured in a pedestrian versus automobile accident in Siloam Springs. Both women were transported to regional hospitals where they are receiving care.

Eunbit (Gina): Gina is in stable condition. The doctors have said there is no immediate need for surgery. A lengthy recovery and rehabilitation is still expected. Doctors have ordered continued rest and observation as the next steps in her care.

Dahye (Sarah): Sarah remains in stable, but critical condition. Doctors continue to actively monitor her condition and act as needed. She had surgery on Saturday night to relieve swelling on her brain. Her family arrived from Korea on Sunday night.

JBU staff members remain at the hospital with Gina and Sarah 24 hours a day and are providing updates as they become available. At this time it is not helpful or advisable for the students to receive visitors.

Please continue to pray for their recovery and for their families.

JBU will keep this web page updated as new information becomes available.
