Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 3, 2003) - John Brown University met UT-Permian Basin and College of the Southwest at Bacone College in Muskogee for a double header in volleyball on Thursday afternoon. The Golden Eagles came out on top in both matches, defeating UT-Permian Basin 3-0 and College of the Southwest 3-1. The three wins against Permian Basin were 30-26, 30-21 and 30-24. The College of the Southwest match had JBU winning games 1-3-4 with scores of 30-21, 30-10 and 30-20 and losing the second game 27-30.
Statistical leaders for JBU on the afternoon were senior Kemi Rogers with 27 kills, frosh Rachel Melby with 54 assists, senior Jairin Schrader with 40 digs and sophomore Helen Gross had 7 blocked shots.
Upon the team’s return to Siloam Springs, coach Robyn Gordon had the following to say regarding the matches. “We needed to win these two Region VI matches to position ourselves well in the Region. Winning with a big margin against UTPB really helped since they were tied for 4th in the Region and we were at number 6. Hopefully we will move up as many as 3 places next week. We played well and our offense was great in both matches. We hit 36% as a team in both matches, averaging 17 kills a game against UTPB and 15.5 against CSW. All of our hitters did a great job and really came prepared to win. We look forward to our leading hitter, Meghann Wharton, being able to return from her injury for our next match.”
JBU upped their season record to 16-7 with the dual victories. The next match is at home on October 16 at 7 pm against Southwest Baptist University, a team the Golden Eagles defeated earlier in the season.
