Siloam Springs, Ark (September 10, 2003) - John Brown University put their 8-1 season record on the line Tuesday night at Harding University and came away with an 8-2 record. Harding defeated the Golden Eagles in 3 straight games to take the match. Scores of 17-30, 30-32 and 26-30 spelled the defeat for JBU.
Meghann Wharton, NAIA Region VI volleyball player of the week, continued her dominance in the hitting categories. Wharton led the team with 13 kills and added 9 digs in the losing effort. Freshman Rachel Melby continued setting the pace for the team in assists with 31 for the evening. Elisa Evans once again ranked tops for JBU in blocks with 6 and Christine Wells contributed 23 digs in the 3 games.
“Harding has a good volleyball team, but we definitely had our chances to beat them. We controlled game 2 until the end and made some critical mistakes to give them the opening they needed. Game 3 was close fought and once again we made errors near the end that cost us a chance to win,” commented Coach Robyn Gordon concerning the match. “We averaged 15 kills, 3 blocks and 30 digs a game and those are tremendous stats for us. We passed and served with a great balance between aggressiveness and consistency throughout the evening and this is another step in our progress toward becoming a better team this season.”
JBU goes on the road again this weekend for a tournament at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa before returning home on September 16 for a 7:00 pm match with Bacone College.
