Oklahoma City (March 3, 2011) - The fifth seeded JBU women’s basketball team loss 55-60 to the fourth seed Rogers State (Okla.) in early first round action of the 2011 Twid’s Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday morning.
For JBU (20-11), Anna Parish led the team with 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists. And Kortni Kendrick finished with 10 points.
For RSU (22-8), Cortney Crockett led all scorers with 23 points, while Angie Criner finished with 12.
After a poor shooting first half, the teams headed into the locker rooms deadlocked at 24.
The Lady Eagles only shot 32 percent (8-25) in the half, while the Lady Hillcats were a little better at 37.5 percent (9-24).
RSU opened the second half on a 7-0 run capped off by a jumper from Crocket in the paint. But JBU scrapped their way back into it and tied things up at 35 after a bucket from Staffica Bain off the feed from Parish.
Down three with 4:25 to go, Parish drained a deep three-pointer to tie it up at 47, and Jordyn Ferrell would give JBU their first lead of the half, after scoring the reverse lay-in to make it 49-47 with 3:25 left.
After a series of lead changes over the next few possessions, RSU took their final lead of the game when Hunter Peterson canned a trey putting RSU up 54-53 with 1:02 left.
JBU turned the ball over on their next possession, which led to a fast break layup from Crocket and three-point, 56-53, RSU lead with 44 seconds remaining.
JBU tried to even it up on their next trip up the floor, but Kendrick’s three point attempt came up empty, and JBU was forced to send RSU to the line the rest of the way.
Overall, both teams struggled on the day with JBU only hitting 34.5 percent (19-55) of their attempts, and RSU only hit 33.3 percent (21-63). JBU loss the rebounding battle 41-38, which allowed RSU to take a 12-2 advantage on second chance points. RSU also scored 17 points off turnovers compared to only four JBU points off turnovers.
With the win, RSU advances to the semifinals to face the OBU/OCU winner on Friday at 3 p.m.
JBU, meanwhile, must now wait to see if they’ll receive an at-large bid to this year’s national tournament. The tournament qualifiers and bracket are scheduled to be released on Wednesday afternoon, March 9.
