Branson, Mo. (November 14, 2009) - The JBU women’s basketball team came away with a 1-1 record after competing in the College of the Ozark’s Coke Classic this weekend in Branson, Mo. On Friday night, JBU (2-1) downed Iowa Wesleyan 61-59, but on Saturday afternoon the ladies were defeated 79-69 by Hastings (Neb.).
Against Iowa Wesleyan, juniors Emily Ortiz and Ashley Taylor both had 13 points to lead the Golden Eagles. Sophomore Chelsea Garrison earned the double-double after posted 11 points and 11 boards.
Anna Jones led all scorers with 20 points for IWC (2-1).
JBU took a 30-18 lead into the locker rooms after shooting 41% (11-27) in the first period. In the second half, IWC came alive and slowly chiseled away at the JBU lead. JBU, however, managed to hold on for the two-point win.
For the game, JBU shot 39% (20-51) while holding IWC to 33% (19-57). JBU also won the battle of the boards 42-35 but committed 22 turnovers while forcing 18.
In the second bout of the weekend, JBU couldn’t overcome a hot shooting Hastings team that knocked down 55% (27-49) of their attempts on the day. After falling behind by ten points after the first half, the Golden Eagles were able to match HC (5-2) point-for-point, but were unable to overcome the halftime deficit.
JBU had four players in double figures led by Taylor and freshmen Anna Parish and Jessica Berlin all with 15 points, while Garrison picked up another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
HC also had several players in double digits led by Lindsay Ducey’s 24 points.
Overall, JBU shot 40% (26-65) for the game, including 35% (7-20) from long range. JBU won the rebounding edge 35-30 but once again gave up more turnovers than the opponent, 16-13.
