The JBU men's basketball team continued their run through the SAC tournament after defeating the four seed and 24th ranked Northwestern Okla. State Rangers 96-88 in Sooner Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal action.
Once again senior guard Jarrett McGriff was the leading scorer with 22 points and eight boards including 5-of-10 from the floor including 1-of-2 from the arc and 11-of-15 from the charity stripe.
SAC Freshman of the Year Abel Galliguez was close behind with 21 points after a 5-of-7 three point performance.
JBU leading scorer and First Team All-SAC selection Davaughn Jackson added 15 points and nine rebounds, and sixth man Andrius Mikutis rounded out the double digit scoring with 11 points and eight caroms before fouling out down the stretch.
NWOSU (20-11) got 22 points from Brandon Brown and 17 from Brandon Dixon.
Galliguez started things off right for JBU after scoring the first 11 points for JBU and giving his team an early 11-6 lead with 16:31 left in the first.
The Golden Eagles continued to score buckets and went ahead 21-9 after Cody Page capped of a JBU run with back to back treys at the 12:32 mark.
NWOSU responded and came within seven points, 16-23, after Jason Rogers drained a three and two more baskets by Felipe Eichenberger and Brandon Dixon.
At 5:05, JBU was able to put together another run and jump ahead 41-26 after a pair of free throws from Mikutis, but four consecutive buckets from Brown helped NWOSU pull within seven, 34-41, with under two minutes left in the half.
JBU stepped up the intensity in the final two minutes and closed out the half on a 10-3 run to hold on to a 14 point, 51-37, halftime lead.
In the second period, JBU pushed the lead up to 19, 60-41, after a McGriff bucket with 17:09 left in the game, but the Rangers slowly began to chip away and was able to cut it back down to single digits, 71-62, after Dixon knocked down two bonus free throw attempts with 7:08 left.
At the 2:27 mark, Wes Brown scored JBU’s final field goal of the game off the feed from Page giving JBU a seven point, 84-77, cushion. But the Rangers continued to hang around and cut it down to four, 84-80, after Jason Rogers canned a three with 2:14 left in the game.
The Rangers couldn’t get any closer and with time running out, they were forced to send JBU to the line where the Golden Eagles converted 12-of-14 attempts in the final two minutes to hold on for the eight point win.
Overall, JBU (23-9) hit 52% (28-of-54) from the floor including 67% (10-of-15) from the perimeter and 77% (30-of-39) from the free throw line. JBU also dominated the boards, out rebounding the Rangers 41-32.
NWOSU also had a good shooting night overall going 33-of-66 for 50% on the day.
Up next, the Golden Eagles advance to face the the number one seed, Rogers State (Okla.).
