Lubbock, Texas (March 3, 2009) - In opening round action of the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday evening, the John Brown University men’s basketball team finished round one action with a 94-64 dismantling of St. Gregory’s (Okla.)
Jarrett McGriff led JBU with 15 points, followed by Davaughn Jackson with 14, Ryland Allen with 11, and Andrius Mikutis and Justin Ritz with 10 a piece.
Corey Standerfer led all scorers with 23 points for the Cavaliers.
JBU was firing on all cylinders from the beginning and held a 23-8 lead midway through the first half.
After heading into the break with a 44-19 lead, the Golden Eagles continued to hit shots in the second half.
“Our guys did a nice job attacking and finding the open man,” said head coach Clark Sheehy. “But we knew St. Greg’s had the potential to come back on us if we didn’t continue to play hard.”
After holding a commanding lead in the second half, Sheehy brought in his second string who continued knocking down shots.
“I was proud to see those guys come in and keep up the intensity,” said Sheehy.
Overall, JBU shot 60% (33-of-55) from the floor including 61% (11-of-18) from the perimeter. The Golden Eagles also dominated the boards, out rebounding the Cavaliers 45-18.
St. Gregory’s finishes the year at 2-27 overall.
JBU, meanwhile, moves to 22-9 and will advance to quarterfinal action to face the No. 4 seed Northwestern Okla. State on Thursday at 2 p.m. The game will be carried live at on the JBU Athletics website.
