Oklahoma City (November 13, 2008) - The JBU women’s volleyball kept their season alive after defeating Oklahoma City in semifinal action during the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament. JBU, playing as the No. 2 seed, defeated the No. 6 seeded Stars 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 18-25, 15-12) to advance to the championship game on Friday night.
Offensively, four JBU players earned double digit kills. Senior Laurae Marty and sophomore Kirsten Lee totaled 13 kills each followed by sophomore Amber Wilson and junior Christi Newton with 12 each. Junior Britney Kerns and sophomore Alyssa Hanson picked up 25 and 22 assists respectively. Wilson also earned four service aces.
Defensively, Wilson led the team with seven blocks. Junior libero Shannon Proctor picked up 22 digs, Hanson 15, and senior Aubrey Junker had nine.
For OCU, Xiaoting Ma led her team with 29 kills. Vicky Murphy totaled 54 assists, and Shelbey Veselka picked up 27 digs.
JBU (21-10) will play the No. 4 seed Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Friday at 6 p.m. in Oklahoma City. JBU and WBU split 1-1 during the regular season.
WBU (25-7) beat the No. 1 seed Lubbock Christian (Texas) earlier in the day to move on to the championship game.
If the Golden Eagles win the championship game, they will have to face the regular season champions, LCU, on Saturday at 3 p.m. to determine which team will earn an automatic trip to the NAIA National Tournament.
