Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 5, 2008) - The Golden Eagles men’s soccer squad looked impressive on Friday afternoon after defeating Bethel (Ind.) 2-0.
Both teams battled throughout the match as they held each other scoreless until the 63rd minute when Bethel’s keeper fouled sophomore forward Juan Iraola in the box to force the penalty kick. Sophomore Gabriel Duarte received the honors and put it away to give JBU the 1-0 lead.
The next twenty minutes found each team continuing to fight, but in the 87th minute Iraola ended any chance of a Bethel comeback after putting away the assist from sophomore midfielder Caleb Theimer.
“Gabriel did a nice job to put the p.k. away,” said head coach Bob Gustavson. “And Juan gave us some insurance in the end.”
For the game JBU (2-1) outshot Bethel 16-9, and senior keeper Spencer Watson earned the shutout while collecting six saves.
The Golden Eagles return to the field on Saturday when they face Hannibal La Grange at 3 p.m.
