Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 31, 2007) - John Brown University got off to a rough start on day one of the 2007 Fall Classic. In their first match of the day, the Golden Eagles saw tough competition from the University of Mobile (Ala.). Mobile controlled the match early on winning the first two games 30-27, 30-22. John Brown, however, regrouped and claimed the third game 30-19. In the fourth game, Mobile would jump out to an early lead in and never look behind securing the game 30-19 and match, 3-1. Sophomore Christi Newton led the team with 12 kills, while sophomore Britney Kerns and freshman Alyssa Hanson each totaled 15 assists. On the defensive end, freshman Amber Wilson had eight blocks, and sophomore Shannon Proctor had 13 digs.
In their second game of the night, John Brown would take Lyon (Ark.) down to the wire. After falling behind two games, John Brown would pull together and take games three and four. Lyon, however, would regain the momentum going into the fifth game and take the win. The finals scores were 21-30, 23-30, 30-15, 31-29, 10-15.
Newton totaled 15 kills and seven blocks, while Kerns and Hanson had 20 and 21 assists respectively. Proctor recorded 18 digs. Although the team opened the season with two losses head coach Robyn Gordon is optimistic and has already seen growth in her players.
“We saw a lot of improvement from the first match to the second match,” said Gordon. “And the girls are really showing some good things early on.”
On Saturday, day two of the classic, John Brown (0-2) will face Brenau (Ga.) at 12:30 p.m. and Lambuth (Tenn.) at 3 p.m.
