Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 17, 2007) - John Brown University men’s basketball came away with the 85-78 win over No. 8 Southern Nazarene (Okla.) in front of an ecstatic Murray Sells crowd on Saturday night. Freshman James Manthe led the charge with a game high 20 points and six rebounds. Adam Workman pitched in with 19 while Joel Tesis added 14 points and four boards. Leroy Dawson led Southern Nazarene (22-6, 12-4) with 18.
The Golden Eagles took a 22 point lead in halftime after shooting 60 % for the half. However, SNU would battle back after opening the second half on a 17-8 run. With 6:51 remaining Milorad Damjanac would score on a pass from Bobby Albritton to cut the JBU lead down to two. On JBU’s next possession Manthe would extend the lead to five after getting fouled on a lay-up and converting the three point play.
At 3:14 Mildon Ambres would cut the lead down to three, 73-70, on a put back lay up. He would finish with 17. However, Manthe would strike again when Tesis would find him cutting down the lane for the easy lay in to extend the lead to five with under 3:00 remaining.
SNU would turnover the ball over on their next possession and Tesis would once again get an assist after finding Cody Page cutting down the lane for the lay up and seven point lead.
After making both sides of bonus free-throw attempts, SNU would try to press, but Workman would find a wide open Joel Tesis underneath for the alley hoop jam.
With under a minute remaining Brent Kimmel would hit a three pointer to bring SNU within five, but this would be as close as they would get as JBU would hit free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Both teams shot 56 % for the game, but the major difference came from the foul line where JBU went 18-of-22 to only 9-of-11 from SNU.
The win moves John Brown to 16-11 overall and 7-8 in conference play. JBU looks to move up in the standings when they play host to Oklahoma Baptist on Monday night at 8 p.m.
