Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 18, 2006) - The John Brown Golden Eagles earned a crucial Sooner Athletic Conference victory in snowbound Siloam Springs Saturday, defeating Wayland Baptist (Texas) 55-49. Kendra McCormick scored 14 points, breaking the John Brown career scoring record with her first basket just 36 seconds into the ball game. Ashley Wettengel also scored 13 points for John Brown (17-10, 9-6). Christa Condron scored 12 points for Wayland Baptist, and Vanita Wright added a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Wayland Baptist kept the game close throughout the first half, taking their largest lead, 20-16, with 9:31 remaining before halftime. The Golden Eagles then went on an 11-2 run capped by a McCormick 3-pointer at 2:59 to lead 27-22 before the Flying Queens pulled within 27-26 at the break.
Wright hit a field goal one minute into the second half to give Wayland Baptist a brief lead, 28-27. But the Golden Eagles again launched a run, this time an 18-3 one that left John Brown ahead 45-31 with 10:43 left. That would be their largest lead. A 3-pointer by Condron pulled Wayland Baptist (7-20, 2-14) within 49-46 with 2:04 left, but McCormick and Alicia Baer both hit two free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
John Brown hosts 24th-ranked Oklahoma Baptist at 6:00 on Monday.
