Brannan, Young Named Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (November 28, 2012) — Whitney Brannan and Becca Young have been named to the Capital One Academic All‐District® Women’s Soccer and Volleyball team, respectively, as announced by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors Association.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games. The nominees were chosen not only based on academic performance but also their play and contributions to their team’s success.
Brannan currently carries a 3.83 grade point average and majors in Biology. She is the first women’s soccer player to earn the award. The junior midfielder from Tulsa, Okla. tallied six goals and two assists in 17 games played. She turned in one game-winning goal on the season and converted her only penalty kick of 2012 when she netted her opportunity in John Brown’s shootout upset of Rogers State (Okla.) in the 2012 Sooner Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals.
Brannan finished the 2012 campaign with 37 shots on goal, 72 overall, which placed her at No. 34 in the nation in shots per game (4.24). The women’s soccer program finished the season at 9-6-2 in a 1-0 loss to No. 6 Oklahoma City in the SAC tournament semifinals.
“This is a great honor for Whitney,” said head coach Scott Marksberry. “She had a strong contribution in every one of our games this year, and I thought that she had moments in which she was the most dangerous player on the field. At the same time, Whitney is a very dedicated student; it is not uncommon to hear study groups break out on our road trips, and Whitney is often right in the middle of it.
“We expect her classroom performance to remain strong, especially as she applies for the Pre-Professional program in the coming weeks.”
Young is the first volleyball player to be nominated to the All-District team since teammate Erin Didier earned third-team All-District in 2010. Young currently holds a grade point average of 3.91 and majors in Psychology. The sophomore defensive specialist posted a team-high 509 digs in 2012, averaging 3.69 digs per game.
Young, native of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, led her team to the 2012 Sooner Athletic Conference tournament semifinals where the Golden Eagles eventually fell, 3-1, to No. 10 Oklahoma Baptist.
John Brown closed the season with a 22-16 overall record after dispatching Oklahoma City, 3-1, in the SAC tournament quarterfinals.
