SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (November 6, 2012) - Sierra Shipley's game-high 18 points wasn't enough as the visiting Scots used hot three-point shooting to escape Bill George Arena with a 68-65 victory tonight over John Brown.
Shipley was the only Golden Eagle to reach double-digit points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. She was also able to knock down two of her four three-point attempts.
Finishing with nine points was Kami Garrison, shooting 4-for-10 from the field including converting her only triple attempt.
Lyon (1-0) took a four-point lead into the half on the heels of 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc (55.6 percent).
The Scots jumped on JBU early, leading throughout the entirety of contest. The visitor's lead ballooned to 11 points with five minutes remaining in the first half (27-16).
John Brown made its run in the second half, however, piecing together a 23-15 streak that pulled the Golden Eagles within one point (66-65) after a Lauren Rogers' shot from the paint fell.
After the Scots converted 1-of-2 free throws, JBU had an opportunity to tie the score, but with 54 seconds remaining, Shipley's offensive foul gave the ball back to Lyon.
Unable to convert the one-and-one, the Golden Eagles regained possession but were forced to foul when Shipley's jumper would fall followed by Garrison's missed put-back attempt.
The Scots made one shot at the charity stripe to push the lead back to three before Roger's long-distance shot was off-target, handing Lyon the victory.
Rogers and Garrison each finished the night with four assists. John Brown won the battle of the boards (36-26) but was ultimately undone by the hot three-point shooting of the Scots which finished 10-of-18 from three-point range.
John Brown will now participate in Kansas Wesleyan's Oz Classic tournament on Nov. 9-10. The Golden Eagles will face host KWU on Friday before taking on Hastings (Neb.) in a Saturday afternoon battle.
