John Brown Earns Five-Star Award as Champion of Character Institution
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (October 25, 2012) — John Brown University has again been honored by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as a Five-Star institution for the 2011-12 academic year in the Champions of Character Scorecard, released this week by the national office.
John Brown is one of 221 colleges and universities around the country that was able to garner the award.
The Champions of Character Scorecard measures each institution's commitment to the NAIA Champions of Character program. Points are earned in five key areas: character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Within those areas, institutions earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by obtaining zero ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.
The NAIA's five core values include: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
"We are very excited about receive the Five-Star Award," said Jeff Soderquist, John Brown's Champions of Character Director. "It is an honor to be around a wonderful athletic program that has exceptional coaches and student-athletes that want to give back to the community.
"I can't help but be very proud to be a Golden Eagle."
Award members scored 60 or more points on the NAIA Champions of Character Scorecard. JBU eclipsed that mark by 10 points, finishing with 70 for the 2011-12 academic year.
"I am honored to be a part of an athletic department committed to the total development of the student-athlete," added Director of Athletics Robyn Daugherty. "I am proud of all that our student-athletes participate in community service and strive for high achievement in the classroom. With the intentional emphasis placed on the NAIA's five core values by our coaches and staff, we know our students are being trained to be strong and ethical leaders of tomorrow."
Montana Tech topped the national charts by posting a perfect score of 100. The Sooner Athletic Conference was also named a 2011-12 Champions of Character conference and leading the way for the SAC was Oklahoma City as the Stars posted an impressive score of 84.
Seven Sooner Athletic Conference members received Five-Star Award accolades.
