Sikes Nets Game-Winner in 44th Minute in 2-1 Win Over St. Gregory's

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (October 17, 2012) — Zari Prescod and Brandon Sikes each scored first-half goals en route to a 2-1 John Brown (6-5-1, 2-3-0 SAC) victory over visiting St. Gregory's this afternoon at Alumni Field.

Prescod gave the Golden Eagles a quick 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when the freshman attacker scored on a beautiful individual effort evading multiple defender and capping off the play by slipping a shot underneath the Cavalier goalkeeper.

It wasn't until moment before half that John Brown received the game-winning goal from Sikes as the junior forward drilled a shot to the far post extending the JBU lead to 2-0.

SGU (4-9-0, 0-5-0 SAC) outshot John Brown 9-6 in the first half, but keeper Pablo Garcia only needed to make one save in the first half.

The biggest play on defense came in the 69th minute when a Cavalier forward was able to send a shot past Garcia but was deflected out of harm's way when Andre Sandiford-Williams, who was marking his man on the goal line, preserved the shutout bid for Garcia.

Despite outshooting the Cavaliers by a 9-8 margin the second half, the visitors controlled much of the ball possession midway through the second half and received a fortunate bounce when the ball glanced off the head of Martin Gonzalez to a streaking forward that split the unsuspecting Golden Eagle defense, depositing the ball in the corner of the net.

s the tension grew, John Brown responded. In the 86th minute and SGU pressing, JBU had a beautiful opportunity to extend the lead back to two when a rocket off the foot of Gonzalez made its way toward an empty net as John Brown took advantage of an odd-man rush.

Gonzalez, however, was unable to redeem himself as the ball deflected off the underside of the crossbar, shooting back out into play as the score remained 2-1.

The visiting squad looked to equalize the score in the waning moments but the Golden Eagle defense held off the talented Cavaliers for a final score of 2-1.

Garcia finished with three saves on the match while Gonzalez sent five shots toward the SGU net to pace the Golden Eagles on offense. Ryan Duncan added three shots on the afternoon.

John Brown will now turn its attention to Rogers State (Okla.) as the Hillcats welcome JBU to Claremore on Friday (Oct. 19). Kick-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. for a match to be played under the lights and on RSU's new synthetic turf.
