Legislator: time to turn out the lights and go home

(January 27, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- At least one state representative is pondering a question about why the legislature is in special session. Representative Jodie Mahony wondered out loud yesterday why legislators are at the capitol at all. He posed the question after the House Revenue and Tax Committee took a pass on each of the 16 bills before it. Mahony says if nothing is going to get done, he'd rather go home to El Dorado. The special session was called to come up with court-ordered education reforms and find ways to fund them. The committee's chairman, Boyd Hickinbotham says work in the tax committee is necessarily slow because the state's funding needs have not been determined. The Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee also delayed action yesterday, failing to act on any of five bills on its agenda.
