John Brown Women Suffer Second Straight Loss
Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 17, 2004) — John Brown University was defeated in women’s basketball by St. Gregory’s University 62-58 on Saturday afternoon in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The loss was the second Sooner Athletic Conference loss this week for the Golden Eagles. Playing without the service of freshman Ashley Wettengel, the second leading scorer for the Golden Eagles, JBU was unable to establish the offensive rhythm they have shown in earlier season games and fell behind quickly today. A full court press by the home Cavaliers gave JBU trouble in the early stages of the game and allowed St. Gregory’s to take a 29-23 lead at intermission.
JBU made a run at the Cavaliers in the second half and, with 10:30 left in the game, tied the score at 41. Then, at the 7:30 mark, the Golden Eagles took the lead 46-45 on baskets by Kendra McCormick and Lesli Fanning only to have St. Gregory’s regain the lead 45 seconds later at 48-46 on a three-pointer by Danya Nugent. At The 5:18 point,
Fanning hit a three-pointer to give the Golden Eagles another lead at 51-49. St. Gregory’s quickly recovered and outscored JBU 11-7 in the last three minutes to notch the victory.
JBU was led by McCormick’s 20 points and Fanning’s 14 points. Kirstin Mueggenborg was the leading scorer for St. Gregory’s with 20 points
JBU falls to 3-2 in the conference and 11-4 overall. The Golden Eagles will return home for two games next week as they entertain USAO on Thursday evening at 6:00 pm and Northwestern Oklahoma State at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
