Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 8, 2004) - After fighting back to take a lead at 60 – 58, No 9 JBU was unable to hold on and suffered a tough Sooner Athletic Conference loss 76-74 to NAIA No. 15 Lubbock Christian in Siloam Springs on Thursday evening. Jared Fears had 21 points to lead the Chaparrals as they kept the offensive pressure on the Golden Eagles all evening. Attempts by JBU to get back in the game were stymied by Lubbock Christian as they answered each JBU bucket with a score of their own. A dunk by Mo Turner of LCU on a put back as the half ended gave the Chaparrals a 39-34 lead at the intermission.
In addition to Fears, LCU had 3 other players in double figures as James Horner and Brandon Jones each bucketed 18 points and Turner pitched in 10. For JBU, sophomore Brandon Cole with 17 points and senior Abdiel Mendieta with 16 were the offensive leaders. Junior Ryan Woodson picked up a double double for the Golden Eagles with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
“This was a disappointing loss,” said Coach John Sheehy following the game. “We needed to come back after the loss last Saturday and get a win at home. Lubbock has a solid team and played extremely well tonight and we had minor breakdowns at times. I have to give them the credit as they came ready to play. It was a well-played game between two quality SAC teams and it came down to who had the last possession.”
With the loss, JBU drops to 0-2 in SAC play and 12-3 overall. The Golden Eagles will be at home again on Saturday afternoon to take on Wayland Baptist University in a 3:00 pm tilt.
