Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 3, 2004) - Oklahoma Baptist University had 5 players score in double figures on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Golden Eagles of John Brown University 84-69 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Adam Hawkins and Leonard Mosley, both averaging 15 points a game for the season, turned in stellar offensive performances as they scored 22 points each to lead the Bison to the win. Although Golden Eagle freshman Brandon Brown and junior Ryan Woodson had season highs of 19 and 14 points respectively, JBU had trouble all afternoon getting their offensive effort synchronized. A strong defensive effort by the Bison kept the Golden Eagles off balance and constantly fighting for an opening on the offensive end of the floor. JBU’s leading scorer, Brandon Cole, was held to 9 points after failing to score in the opening half.
Sophomore Scott Reasoner, back on the team after being out of basketball during the fall semester, pulled down 6 rebounds and also tossed in 6 points in the losing effort. In addition to his 14 points, Woodson also grabbed 5 caroms.
“Their defense was the difference today. We were not able to get into our offensive scheme because of the pressure they put on us,” said JBU Coach John Sheehy following the loss. “We had to work hard for everything we got offensively. We were able to contain their leading scorer (Jamel Coachman, 19.0 ppg), but they still unloaded on us with 5 in double figures. OBU has a strong team and I have to credit them for their play today.”
JBU falls to 12-2 overall and 0-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play with the loss. The Golden Eagles will return home on Thursday to face SAC foe Lubbock Christian University at 8:00 pm. JBU also will play at home on Saturday at 3:00 pm against Wayland Baptist University in SAC action.
