Huckabee: initiative would consolidate more schools

(January 5, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Governor Huckabee says he plans to push school consolidation with or without the Legislature. The governor says he may take his proposal to the Arkansas voters if legislators don't approve a plan that the governor thinks addresses state Supreme Court concerns with the school system. While he is now pushing consolidation of school districts with fewer than 500 students, he says if he does take the issue to voters, the number will be higher. Reorganizing public schools is key to improving education in the state, the governor says.
