Bill aims at attracting good teachers

(December 23, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Teachers who agree to work in areas with teacher shortages would get some additional benefits under a bill approved by the House Education Committee yesterday. Those benefits include discounted rent and other help with their housing expenses. The bill creates a foundation to oversee four pilot projects. There would be one project in each of the state's Congressional districts, to build housing for teachers in areas with shortages. The sponsor, Representative Linda Chesterfield, says the foundation will work to raise money through the business community and other sources to pay for the housing.
