JBU Women's Basketball Upends Number 19 Columbia College

Siloam Springs, Ark. (December 13, 2003) — John Brown University built a 10 point lead in the first half and went on to defeat NAIA No. 19 Columbia College 74-59 on Saturday afternoon in women’s basketball. Behind the hot shooting of freshman Ashley Wettengel with 19 points and sophomore Kendra McCormick with 22 points, the Golden Eagles capped off the non-conference season with a 11-2 record. JBU never trailed in the contest and denied the Lady Cougars scoring opportunities on a number of occasions. The Golden Eagle defense held Columbia to 31.8 % from the field and only 9.5 % from the 3-point arc.

In addition to her scoring effort, McCormick also led the Golden Eagles in rebounding 8. Wettengel and freshman Jordyn West pulled down 7 caroms each and sophomore Natalie Reid had 6 boards in the JBU victory.

Lisa Kowalewski had 15 points for Columbia College.

“This was a great win as we enter the Christmas break. To beat a ranked team is a plus and I must give credit to our team for the way they prepared for this game in practice this week,” Coach Jeff Soderquist commented after the win. “This will definitely help as we enter the Sooner Athletic Conference season in January.”

JBU opens the conference season on January 3 at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The Golden Eagles return home on January 8 against Lubbock Christian University.
