Governor lowers consolidation threshold

(December 8, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Governor Huckabee's latest education reform proposal would force 97 of Arkansas' 308 school districts to consolidate. The governor lowered the consolidation threshold yesterday to districts with less than 500 students and asked legislators to compromise the rest of the way. The proposal, introduced in the Senate, would require that a merger of districts with fewer than 500 students result in a new diistrict with at least 700 students. Huckabee in January had proposed closing high schools in districts with fewer than 15-hundred students.
