Legislators consider more reform plans

(November 25, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Members of the House and Senate education committees are to meet today to hear a plan by the House majority leader on how to improve public education in Arkansas. Representative Harmon Seawel opposes Governor Huckabee's 375-student enrollment limit for consolidating high schools. He proposes to give all districts until July 2005 to begin offering a standard 38-unit core academic curriculum every year and raising teacher salaries or face forced mergers. Huckabee has tentatively set December eighth for the start of a special session, but has threatened to not issue the call unless legislators come to some agreement beforehand.
