Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 24, 2003) - Six individuals and one relay team from John Brown University qualified this past weekend for the NAIA National Swim meet to be held in Lawrence, Kansas in March. Swimming in the Henderson State Invitational, the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Kathleen Kubricht, Stephanie Burrell, Lindsey Smith and Sara Becker swam 4:09.17 to better the qualifying mark. Other swimmers to better qualifying marks for the first time were Nik Hook and Marshall Gooding in the 50 freestyle with 22.74 and 22.66 respectively, Kendall Witt in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.94, Lindsey Smith in the 100 yard butterfly with 1:04.43, Stephanie Burrell in the 200 yard breaststroke in a time of 2:42.75 and Hook in the 400 individual medley with 4:39.28. With these new qualifiers, the JBU swim teams now have qualified in 26 different events for the national meet.
In team scoring, the Golden Eagle men placed third of five teams in the meet with 269 points and the women were fourth of six teams with 252 points.
Coach Brandi Harris commenting on the meet performances said, “our swimmers are continuing to better their times and we qualify more people each time we swim. I am pleased with the progress we have made so far and look ahead to our next meet.”
JBU will swim again on December 6 in Abilene, Texas against McMurry University and UT-Permian Basin.
