Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 22, 2003) - Led by 4 players in double figures, John Brown University defeated Lyon College on Saturday afternoon in Batesville 72-62. Although JBU was never behind in the game, the score at intermission was only 29-27. Lyon College came out to begin the game in a zone defense and frustrated the Golden Eagle offense keeping the score close in the first half. Adjustments made in the JBU locker room at half allowed the Golden Eagles more offensive opportunities against the zone in the second period and eventually caused the Pipers to go back to man-to-man defense.
Sophomore Kendra McCormick, with 22 points and 11 rebounds, led the way for JBU. In addition to McCormick’s points, sophomore Lesli Fanning with 14, freshman Ashley Wettengel with 12 in only 19 minutes of play, and senior Bethany Sites with 12 points all of which came on 3 pointers, were the other players in double figures. Sites pulled down 7 rebounds to go with her 12 points. Tossing in 4 of 5 key free throws in the final minutes of play, Alicia Baer ended the game with 8 points.
“Lyon made several runs but we stiffened each time and held them off,” commented Coach Jeff Soderquist after the game. “It was good to see the offensive effort with 4 in double figures after the way we started the game against their zone defense. Natalie Reed came off the bench and did a great job in the 12 minutes she played. Her 7 rebounds made a big difference in the outcome of the game”
JBU ups their season record to 6-1 with the win and will travel to Muskogee, Oklahoma next Tuesday to take on Bacone College in a 6:00 pm tilt.
