Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 19, 2003) - In first round action at the NAIA National Soccer Tournament in Olathe, Kansas, 15th seeded Virginia Intermont ousted 18th seeded John Brown University from the tournament with a 3-1 victory. Scoring early in the game on a goal by Godfrey Muyisha, the Cobras took a 1-0 lead at the 3:10 mark of the first half. Rob Sejjemba scored the second Cobra goal at the 9:01 point in the first half and the 2-0 score stood at intermission. Nineteen minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles scored when senior Federico Suarez put back an initial attempt by sophomore Griff Hanning that was blocked by the Virginia Intermont goalkeeper. With the score standing 2-1, Sejjemba scored his second goal of the evening at the 73:25 mark of the game. Although both teams had shots in the remaining minutes, neither could convert and the score remained 3-1 as the final buzzer sounded.
JBU’s Honorable Mention All-American goalkeeper recorded 8 saves in the losing effort and Suarez led the team in shots with a total of 6.
Intermont outshot the Golden Eagles by a slight margin of 25-22.
Virginia Intermont will now face Rio Grande (Ohio), the 2nd seed, in second round action on Thursday afternoon. The loss ends the season at 13-5-2 for the Golden Eagles.
